Quality Time With The Fam

The days may be long when they’re babies, but get shorter as they grow up. Don’t let the years fly by without getting in some quality family time in the Northwoods. We’re big on putting special emphasis on simple pleasures.

Throw in a Line
Fish from the piers or take out an aluminum fishing boat (complimentary to overnight guests of Black Bear Lodge) and get a feel for Little St. Germain Lake, deemed the most fertile fishing waters in northern Wisconsin. Trust us, there’s musky, walleye, northern, bass and pan fish swimming below the surface.  Need to launch your boat? Do it right here. The fish-cleaning house will be your next stop. Check your calendar and plan a trip up here during the middle of August so you can partake in the National Championship Musky Open in Eagle River on the chain of 28 lakes.

A Slice of Americana
Start at Black Bear Lodge, where there are two private sand beaches for swimming, a swim raft, plus playgrounds and sand boxes. Head out for a waterski show. There’s the Chain Skimmers on Lake Pleasant, the Plum Ski-ters on Plum Lake, the Skiing Skeeters on Rest Lake, and the famous Min-aqua Bats who perform at the Aqua Bowl in Minocqua. And this next one is pure northwoods – it’s the Scheer’s Lumberjack Show in Woodruff. For a bit of red, white and blue, access the events page for July 4th observances in the area. For lots of red, take a cranberry marsh tour in Manitowish Waters. The bog tours are held every Friday and cranberry samples are free. Make it a blue-ribbon vacation with a stop at the Vilas County Fair in Eagle River usually held towards the beginning of August.

Grill Out
While there is lots of great restaurants in the area to choose from, don’t think you have to go out for every meal. Stay here at the resort but grill out. Stock up on groceries at our local hometown grocery store, Sentry Foods. While your there, pick up some made from scratch donuts from the bake shoppe, connected to the store.

For a family style meal that is quite unique and memorable, we recommend trying out Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty in Minocqua. Try out their breakfast, lunch or dinner. A dining experience unlike any other.

Zippity Doo Dah
For an eco-adventure, give the Northwoods Zip Line Tour a try. It’s a canopy tour built in and around towering pine trees. You’ll travel down nine zip lines for a full mile of on-line fun.

Learning is Fun
Get away from the gadgets and have some hands-on fun at the Northwoods Children’s Museum in Eagle River. There are two dozen interactive exhibits plus new exhibits with themes tied to space, badger mines, fresh from the farm and others that rotate every few months. Meet the residents of the Northwoods Wildlife Center in Minocqua, including turtles, falcons, owls and hawks. This wildlife rehabilitation center has tours and nature programs all summer-long. Trees for Tomorrow offers a variety of youth and family nature programs. For both a fun and unique educational experience, we recommend checking this place out.

Do a Little Souvenir Shopping
Doesn’t’ have to be expensive but it should mean something. (At least that’s our vacation shopping philosophy). The downtown shops in St. Germain, Eagle River and Minocqua get that. Visit these hometown shops and find a little something special for those loved ones back home or buy yourself a Northwoods memento to help you remember your fun-filled vacation.

Family Photo Ops
We know you’re going to have your camera handy at all times, so here are three favorite family photo ops to consider: Posing with the giant statue of Chief St. Germain that’s located right downtown, on our pier at sunset with the lake shimmering in the background, and around a cozy campfire at dusk on the grounds of our picturesque resort.

Rainy Day Pursuits
In Eagle River, take in a blockbuster at the Vilas Cinema, Go bowling at Eagle Lanes, Try to escape out of the Northwoods Escape Room or have some fun at the Eagle Falls Adventure Golf and Laser Tag property. If you like to visit Minocqua/Woodruff instead, try out the Island City Lanes for bowling fun, a new release at the Lakeland 6 movie theater, The Key to Escape Room Center or try your mini golfing skills at one of the numerous mini golf courses.
