While you may never achieve qualifying times for Olympic cross country skiing or Nordic combined or make the hockey or figure skating squads, you can still breathe in the glory that comes with a good workout.
Strap on snowshoes
Snowshoeing is good exercise, it’s relatively easy on the joints and you can take time to really enjoy the scenery. Here’s a tip: If you’re looking for a good workout, take to the lake, as in Little St. Germain Lake, and approach it like a jog. Free snowshoe rentals in the Black Bear Lodge office.
Cross-country skiing for beginners
The cross-country skiers at the local Chamber office say Razorback Ridges Trail has some great loops for people new to the sport. There’s also the Shannon Lake Trail – pick it up just north of St. Germain – with a mix of easy/beginner and intermediate loops. The loop around Shannon Lake is especially scenic.
Cross-country skiing for self-professed pros
The Fern Ridge Trail in St. Germain is somewhat rugged (read – for intermediate skiers). It is seven miles long.
Drop the puck
Pond hockey is big in these parts. If you’re a hockey fan, make a point to attend the Pond Hockey National Championships every February in Eagle River.
At Black Bear Lodge, we have a groomed ice rink right on the lake. It’s even lit. Free skate rentals in the resort office. Give the triple lutz your best shot, or not.
No fancy equipment needed to get in a good hike. Although you may want to stow your camera in your backpack to take a group shot of your adventure. Pick up a hiking trail map for the county at the local Chamber office, 473 Hwy 70 East.
Best cup of coffee, best breakfast
If your plan is to make it the best day of (fill in the blank with your favorite winter sport) ever, then get off on the right foot with a great cup of joe. Our pick for best cup of coffee goes to Red Canoe Coffee Co. inside the St. Germain Bake Shoppe. The morning buns at the bake shoppe are baked fresh every morning, just sayin’. For a sit-down breakfast, you have to try the walleye and eggs entrée at DJ’s Northwoods Family Restaurant. No kidding, it is absolutely delicious. Wolf Pack Café is another favorite among locals and visitors. It claims to have the world’s best pancakes and we believe that to be true.
