Your golf swing will look better against a backdrop of reds and golds. The vibrant fall colors will give you a burst of energy for hiking and biking. And the fish will still be biting big-time. Sounds like a great guys’ fall getaway in the making.
The days are warm, the evenings cool, the autumn colors spectacular. So how it is that golf rates actually drop in the fall? Call it a pleasant happenstance and one that warrants a weekend away. A quick survey of area courses turned up killer rates at St. Germain Golf Course and Eagle River Golf Course.
Hiking and Biking
If 90-degree days are not your thing, then a comfortably cool fall excursion for hiking and biking should be more to your liking. Our favorite trails for a great workout and great fall colors include Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail. Along with biking, how about motorcycling? The annual Tomahawk Fall Ride with tons of Harleys and loads of live music is now in its 33rd year and runs September 9-13.
The days get shorter and the fish get hungrier in the fall, so it’s no coincidence that anglers get extra hungry for a fishing getaway this time of year too. Maybe you’ll finally land that trophy musky. Look for walleye and smallmouth bass fishing action to increase in the fall too. Time your trip to the Greater Wisconsin Muskie Tournament, October 3-4.
Disc Golf Anyone?
There’s a new disc golf course in Woodruff called Brandy Lake Disc Golf. This mostly wooded course has some challenging fairways. There’s a variety of other courses including Sandy Point Disc Golf Range , Northland Pines and Sugar Camp Disc Golf course all within 20 miles of Black Bear Lodge. These courses offer a variety of terrain and obstacles for any level of player. Friendly wager anyone? Search St. Germain on DG Course Review for more details.
Whatever Floats Your Boat
At Black Bear Lodge you can dock your own. Rent a pontoon or motor boat. Use one of the complimentary row boats provided by the resort. Try kayaking or canoeing, again complimentary for overnight guests. Just make sure to get out on the water. The fish are biting and the fall colors are beautiful.
Friday Night Fish Fry
Whether or not you’re successful fishing must never put a damper on a Friday Night Fish Fry, with area restaurants having mastered this northwoods tradition. The Bear’s Den Bar & Grill at the resort has five different fish options.
For those who enjoy a craft beer, there’s the Minocqua Brewing Company, housed in a 1927 former Masonic Temple. This microbrewery produces seven kinds of ales and lagers and the brewery’s restaurant offers standards with a gourmet twist. In Boulder Junction, there’s the Aqualand Ale House, where it could be tough to decide given they have up to 20 taps of craft beer. Try the flatbread pizza or paninis while you’re there.
