Quality Time With The Fam

The days may be long when they’re babies, but get shorter as they grow up. Don’t let the years fly by without getting in some quality family time in the Northwoods. We’re big on putting special emphasis on simple pleasures.

Throw in a Line
Fish from the piers or take out an aluminum fishing boat (complimentary to overnight guests of Black Bear Lodge) and get a feel for Little St. Germain Lake, deemed the most fertile fishing waters in northern Wisconsin. Trust us, there’s musky, walleye, northern, bass and pan fish swimming below the surface.  Need to launch your boat? Do it right here. The fish-cleaning house will be your next stop. If you’re here the weekend of August 14-16, take in the National Championship Musky Open in Eagle River. It’s for all ages and all skill levels.

Kid-tastic Activities Right at the Resort
The Children’s Activities Program at Black Bear Lodge is all the proof you need that we really enjoy entertaining kids. After all, who doesn’t love a little kickball, watermelon football, sand sculpting and scavenger hunting.

A Slice of Americana
Start at Black Bear Lodge, where there are two private sand beaches for swimming, a swim raft, plus playgrounds and sand boxes. Head out for a waterski show. There’s the Chain Skimmers on Lake Pleasant, the Plum Ski-ters on Plum Lake, the Skiing Skeeters on Rest Lake, and the famous Min-aqua Bats who perform at the Aqua Bowl in Minocqua. And this next one is pure northwoods – it’s the Scheer’s Lumberjack Show in Woodruff. For a bit of red, white and blue, access the events page for July 4th observances in the area. For lots of red, take a cranberry marsh tour in Manitowish Waters. The bog tours are held every Friday and cranberry samples are free. Make it a blue ribbon vacation with a stop at the Vilas County Fair in Eagle River, August 6-9.

Grill Out
Don’t feel like you have to dine out for every meal. In fact, it’s quite the opposite at Black Bear Lodge. Stay in but grill out. Stock up on groceries at St. Germain Sentry Foods. While you’re there, pick up some made-from-scratch donuts in the bake shoppe that’s connect to the store. For a family-style meal that is quite memorable, you have to try Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty in Minocqua. It’s a classic to be sure. Now, if you love ribs, mark your calendar for the 10th annual Pig in the Pines RibFest in St. Germain – it run July 30, 31, and August 1.

Zippity Doo Dah
For an eco-adventure, give the Northwoods Zip Line Tour a try. It’s a canopy tour built in and around towering pine trees. You’ll travel down nine zip lines for a full mile of on-line fun.

Learning is Fun
Get away from the gadgets and have some hands-on fun at the Northwoods Children’s Museum in Eagle River. There are two dozen interactive exhibits plus new exhibits with themes tied to space, badger mines, fresh from the farm and others that rotate every few months. Meet the residents of the Northwoods Wildlife Center in Minocqua, including turtles, falcons, owls and hawks. This wildlife rehabilitation center has tours and nature programs all summer-long. Every Tuesday at Trees for Trees for Tomorrow there’s a nature program designed for the entire family.

Bear River Pow Wow
Lac du Flambeau’s annual traditional Pow Wow, now in its 33rd year, brings together tribes from across the nation to celebrate Native American culture and traditions. This year it’s July 11-13 at the Old Indian Village on the Bear River Pow Wow Grounds in Lac du Flambeau.

Do a Little Souvenir Shopper
Doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should mean something. (at least that’s our vacation shopping philosophy) The downtown shops in Eagle River and Minocqua get that. Make sure you have time to savor an ice cream cone too.

Family Photo Opps
We know you’re going to have your camera handy at all times, so here are three favorite family photo opps to consider: Posing with the giant statue of Chief St. Germain that’s right downtown, on the pier at sunset with the lake in the background and around the campfire at dusk (we have several campfire sites at scenic overlooks on the grounds of Black Bear Lodge).

Rainy Day Pursuits
Take in a summer blockbuster at the Vilas Cinema 5 in Eagle River or the Lakeland Cinema 6 in Woodruff. Make it a matinee and then head back to the resort for family game night.
