For Artsy Types
The Northwoods is awash with great art. Who knew! Along with all the artful gallery, event and concert options, how about indulging your inner photographer too, staring with some sunrise shots on the shore of Little St. Germain Lake.
Walk In The Woods Art Fair
This annual gathering of talented artists from around the Midwest is June 6. It’s held in the park behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce and features pottery, paintings, photography, handmade jewelry, woodcarvings and furniture. There are wine tastings too.
Northwoods Arts Tour
We love the first line of copy on this art tour’s web site: Poets and philosophers who have suggested that “art is the right hand of nature” surely had the Northwoods Art Tour in mind. We agree! More than 30 of the area’s finest artists open the doors of their studios and galleries on July 25, 26 and 27. Meet painters, potters, photographers, jewelry artists, furniture makers, fiber artists, even a book binder who does incredible work. This is fine art at, well, its finest.
This art fair at Riverside Park in Eagle River, now in its 43nd year, brings in 110 juried artists from all over the country to the northwoods of Wisconsin for a one-day show. It’s slated for July 18th.
Held on the grounds of the Land O’Lakes Town Hall, this exhibition of fine art and fine craft includes items for show and sale. The date is July 25.
Artistic Shopping Finds
Make an appointment at Wildlife In Wood in St. Germain, where the original bird carvings by artist Barry Benecke are carved life-size from a single block of wood or natural log. A typical carving represents hundreds of hours of work. The Boulder Junction web site has an entire page devoted to art galleries. We also like Peeplelures in Boulder Junction for their incredible jewelry.
Concerts in the Park
Held every Thursday at Torpy Park in Minocqua, this is where local musicians gather to provide music as a gift to the many visitors to the area. That sentiment is music to our ears.
Open Studio Garden Walks
July 5 and August 8 are the dates for the 2015 Garden Walks held at Whataview Farm in Phelps. These are free events. Stop in this farm/fiber studio and tour the expansive gardens. Pull up a seat on the patio and enjoy a glass of cold rhubarb slush. Saunter into the studio to see spinning and weaving demonstrations by the owner. And shop
The Art of Wine Making
Toast to your good taste at Three Lakes Winery. They’ve been making the “Original Cranberry Wine” since 1972. Brigadoon Winery in Tripoli just turned 10 and just expanded. They use local fruit whenever possible and continue to work on their own vineyard. Take a tour, then enjoy a cheese and sausage tray on the deck with wine by the glass.
