Annual Summer Groupaway

Are you in charge of planning the annual “groupaway” that includes your best buds, fellow college alum, favorite current neighbors and significant others? We’ve got you covered. Hint: Turn off the cell phones, tablets and laptops; you’ll be surprised at how, in very short order, you won’t miss them.

Disc Golf Anyone?
There’s a new disc golf course in Woodruff called Brandy Lake Disc Golf, ready for you to come and play. This mostly wooded course has some challenging fairways. Friendly wager anyone?

Tee It Up
For challenging golf of another sort,  guests of BBL will enjoy  savings at these courses – plus we’ll be happy to make tee times for you! There’s the St. Germain Golf Club, an 18-hole championship course with pristine fairways cut through a forest of red and white pines and no homes adjacent to any fairway. The signature hole there is Number 5. If you’re a group of die-hard golfers, then you’ll love the 10% off golf perk on a handful of courses, courtesy of Black Bear Lodge. Discounts on Golf are also available at Timber Ridge.

Whatever Floats Your Boat
Dock your own. Rent a pontoon or motor boat. Use one of the complimentary row boats provided by the resort or visit FlyBoatRentals in Florida where you will find more options to choose from. Try kayaking or canoeing, again complimentary for overnight guests. Just make sure to get out on the water.

Fishing from Sun Up to Sun Down
Ah, to be fishing on one of the most “fertile” waters of northern Wisconsin. Plus, the resort has an on-site boat launch and sells fishing licenses (and state park passes) right at the main office where you can find these services. Compare catches in the Fish Cleaning House.

Friday Night Fish Fry
Whether or not you’re successful fishing must never put a damper on a Friday Night Fish Fry, with area restaurants having mastered this northwoods tradition. The Bear’s Den Bar & Grill at the resort has five different fish options.

For those who enjoy a craft beer, there’s the Minocqua Brewing Company, housed in a 1927 former Masonic Temple. This microbrewery produces seven kinds of ales and lagers and the brewery’s restaurant offers standards with a gourmet twist. In Boulder Junction, there’s the Aqualand Ale House, where it could be tough to decide given they have up to 20 taps of craft beer. Try the flatbread pizza or paninis while you’re there.

Triathlon, Qualifying Marathon
The Minocqua Triathlon features sprint and distance events that will challenge athletes with its “woods and waters” course through the scenic Northwoods. It’s August 8.  Later that month, August 30 to be exact, is the No Frills Marathon, also in Minocqua. This is a Boston Marathon quality event, but the course along the Bearskin Trail will suit beginners as well.
